Investor Activity on the WSE in August

Trading turnover in shares on the WSE Main Market increased by 44.8% year-on-year in August, reaching PLN 51.9 billion. The average daily value of share trading within the order book amounted to PLN 2.45 billion. The Warsaw Stock Exchange Index (WIG) reached a new all-time high of 153,948.20 points, while the WIG20 index exceeded 4,000 points for the first time in history. Investors have not seen such an active summer period on the Warsaw market for many years.

Equity Market

August 2026, similarly to July, maintained a high level of activity in the equity market. The total value of share trading on the WSE Main Market increased by 44.8% YoY to PLN 51.9 billion. Trading turnover within the order book amounted to PLN 51.4 billion, representing an increase of 44.0% YoY. The average daily value of share trading in August reached PLN 2.45 billion, up 37.1% YoY.

August also brought very strong performance in the key indices of the Warsaw Stock Exchange. At the end of the month, the WIG stood at 152,553.34 points, representing a gain of 30.1% year-to-date. WIG20 closed the month above 4,000 points for the first time in history. Its closing level of 4,022.92 points means the index has gained 26.4% year-to-date.

The total value of share trading on the NewConnect market amounted to PLN 163 million in August, down 11.4% YoY. Trading turnover within the order book decreased by 12.1% YoY to PLN 161.2 million.

Share trading turnover on the GlobalConnect market reached PLN 20.4 million in August, compared with PLN 13.1 million in the corresponding period of the previous year.

Structured Products and ETF Market

August confirmed continued strong investor interest in ETFs, ETNs and ETCs. Total turnover in these instruments increased by 116.9% YoY, reaching PLN 552.3 million.

Turnover in structured products also increased, amounting to PLN 325.5 million in August, up 57.8% YoY.

Derivatives Market

The total trading volume in derivatives decreased by 3.7% YoY in August to 0.7 million contracts. Declines were recorded in both index futures and currency futures. Trading volume in index futures fell by 5.5% YoY to 423.8 thousand contracts, while volume in currency futures declined by 34.2% YoY to 88.3 thousand contracts. The strongest performance was recorded in the equity futures segment, where trading volume increased by 56.2% YoY to 129.2 thousand contracts.

Debt Market                                                      

In August, the Catalyst market continued its growth trajectory. The value of non-Treasury bond issues listed on the market stood at PLN 170.1 billion at the end of August, compared with PLN 146.5 billion a year earlier.

Trading turnover in bonds within the order book increased by 26.2% YoY to PLN 701.9 million.

In August, bond trading turnover on the Treasury BondSpot Poland market rose by 98% YoY, reaching PLN 259.2 billion.

New Listings

Two new ETF instruments managed by PZU TFI debuted on the WSE Main Market in August. The Warsaw exchange offering was expanded by: PZU ETF Long-Term Treasury Bonds Portfolio Closed-End Investment Fund and PZU ETF Floating-Rate Treasury Bonds Portfolio Closed-End Investment Fund.

On the NewConnect market, Thorium Space made its debut. The company represents the deep-tech sector and specialises in developing secure satellite communication technologies for both civilian and military applications. It became the tenth representative of the new technology sector listed on the WSE's alternative trading system and the seventh company to debut on this market in 2026.

On the GlobalConnect market, SpaceX, the U.S. aerospace and telecommunications leader founded by Elon Musk in 2002, debuted last month. The company develops space technologies, manufactures reusable launch vehicles and spacecraft, and operates the global Starlink satellite internet network.

Capitalisation of WSE Listed Companies

The market capitalisation of 385 domestic companies listed on the WSE Main Market amounted to PLN 1.42 trillion at the end of August 2026. The combined market capitalisation of all 404 listed companies, both domestic and foreign, reached PLN 3.05 trillion.

Polish Power Exchange

The total volume of electricity trading on the spot and futures markets of TGE reached 11.9 TWh in August 2026, representing an increase of 35.0% year on year. Growth was recorded in both market segments. On the spot market, trading volume amounted to 4.7 TWh, up 16.7% year on year, while on the futures market it reached 7.2 TWh, an increase of 50.5% year on year.

Natural gas trading volume totalled 7.3 TWh, down 54.4% year on year. However, activity increased on the spot market, where trading volume rose by 82.4% year on year to 2.1 TWh. On the futures market, volume declined by 64.8% year on year to 5.3 TWh.

The trading volume of property rights arising from certificates of origin, excluding "white certificates", amounted to 0.8 TWh on the spot market in August, a decrease of 14.9% year on year. At the same time, the trading volume of property rights related to energy efficiency, i.e. white certificates, increased by 36.8% year on year to 6.4 thousand toe.

Trading in Guarantees of Origin for electricity generated from renewable energy sources increased by 32.5% year on year in August, reaching 4.2 TWh.
