Over 3 Million Brokerage Accounts in Poland
The number of securities accounts maintained by brokerage houses, brokerage offices, and banks in Poland has exceeded 3 million for the first time in history. According to data reported to the National Depository for Securities (KDPW), financial institutions maintained 3,029,784 accounts as of the end of August 2026, marking another important milestone in the development of the Polish capital market.
Over the past three years, the number of securities accounts has increased by nearly 82%, from 1.67 million at the end of August 2023 to 3.03 million at the end of August 2026. The 3 million threshold was surpassed just 19 months after reaching 2 million accounts, whereas it took more than 16 years for the number of accounts to grow from 1 million to 2 million.

The growth in the number of accounts has been accompanied by strong activity among domestic retail investors. At the end of the first half of 2026, the number of active brokerage accounts stood at 444,000. During the same period, domestic retail investors increased the value of their trading activity to PLN 78 billion, the highest level since the first half of 2021.
The increase in the number of accounts occurred during a period of strong market performance on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Between 13 October 2023 and 8 September 2026, the WIG index rose by 137%, while WIG20 gained 111%. Since the beginning of 2026, the indices have increased by 33.7% and 30.9%, respectively, reaching record highs of 156,697.84 points and 4,166.39 points on 8 September.
