October on the Warsaw Stock Exchange
In October 2004, the WIG20 and WIG indices showed a small increase. The remaining WSE indices ended the month at a level lower than that of the last September session.
Among all listed companies, 68 showed a positive rate of return.
The cash market turnover amounted to PLN 9 829 million and was 26% higher than in September. On the futures market, the turnover totalled PLN 9 779 million and was 9% higher than in the previous month.
On October 4, 2004, ordinary bearer bonds series A convertible into ordinary bearer shares series F issued by MCI company made their debut on the Exchange.
On October 8, 2004, shares of BORSODCHEM Rt. debuted on the Exchange. 76 179 800 shares of the company were introduced into trading on the Exchange. This is the second foreign company present on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (the first foreign company listed was Bank Austria Creditanstalt AG). BORSODCHEM Rt. is one of the largest producers of mass and specialised chemical products in Europe. Shares of BORSODCHEM Rt. are listed in the continuous trading system under the abbreviated name „BCHEM” and ticker symbol „BCH”.
On October 12, 2004, allotment certificates concerning ordinary bearer shares series B for FAM – Technika Odlewnicza company debuted on the Exchange. FAM – Technika Odlewnicza SA is one of the largest domestic producers of fittings and accessories for the furniture and construction sector. 993 219 allotment certificates were introduced into trading on the main market. Allotment certificates are traded in the continuous trading system under the abbreviated name „FAM-PDA” and ticker symbol „FAMA”.
Starting from October 18, 2004, shares of the NOVITA company were moved from the single-price auction system to the continuous trading system.
On October 20, 2004, three-year Treasury bonds with a floating interest rate and maturing on November 5, 2004 (TZ1104) were quoted for the last time on the Exchange.
On October 15, 2004, shares of SWISSMED CENTRUM ZDROWIA debuted on the Exchange. 3 553 000 ordinary bearer shares of series B and 1 530 262 ordinary bearer shares of series C were introduced into trading on the main market. The company operates on the medical services market in the area of open medical care, hospital services and medical services, as well as builds and operates healthcare related sites. Shares of SWISSMED CENTRUM ZDROWIA are quoted in the continuous trading system under the abbreviated name „SWISSMED” and ticker symbol „SWD”.
From October 21, 2004, the following companies were moved from the single-price system (with two auctions daily) to continuous trading:

From October 21, 2004, shares of BICK were moved from the continuous trading system to the single-price auction system with two auctions daily.
Further to the name change of Mostostal-Siedlce to Polimex Mostostal-Siedlce, starting from October 18, 2004, shares of this company are quoted under the new abbreviated name „POLIMEXMS” and ticker symbol „PMX”.
Following October 22, 2004, shares of HOWELL were delisted (due to issuer’s bankruptcy).
On the trading session on October 28, 2004, shares of series A of WYDAWNICTWA SZKOLNE i PEDAGOGICZNE SA were allotted through the Exchange. The first quotation of the company will take place on November 3, 2004.
Due to the name change of NARODOWY FUNDUSZ INWESTYCYJNY HETMAN S.A. to NARODOWY FUNDUSZ INWESTYCYJNY EMPIK MEDIA & FASHION S.A., starting from October 27, 2004, shares of this company are quoted under the new abbreviated name „NFIEMF” and ticker symbol „EMF”.
On October 27, 2004, Treasury bonds with a fixed interest rate and maturing on October 24, 2015 (abbreviated name DS1015) debuted on the Exchange.
In October 2004, apart from newly-listed companies, shares of the following companies were introduced into trading on the Exchange: Forte, Hutmen, MCI, Energopol – Południe, Apator, PGF, Wandalex, Prochem, Inwar & Biuro System and Elzab.
Changes in indices
From October 1, 2004, portfolios of the WIRR and WIG-PL indices were supplemented with a packet of 2 797 000 shares of ATM.
From October 20, 2004, the WIRR index portfolio was supplemented with a packet of 2 542 000 shares of SWISSMED.
As of October 29, 2004, the GETIN company was assigned to the Banking Sector (previously in the Finance – Other category).
After the last session of October 2004, a periodical adjustment to the CESI index took place. The CESI index portfolio comprises shares of companies listed in Warsaw, Prague, Budapest, Ljubljana and Bratislava. As a result of the adjustment, the following WSE-listed companies are included in the CESI portfolio: TPSA, PEKAO, PKNORLEN, BANKBPH, KGHM, BZWBK and BRE (returning to the index following a 6-month break). Companies from Warsaw have the largest weight in the CESI index (42%), followed by Prague (29%) and Budapest (21%).
