Green Bonds Demystified

The Warsaw Stock Exchange (WSE) has published the Green Bond Handbook, the first publication of its kind to provide such a comprehensive overview of green bond issuance on the Catalyst market. The guide takes issuers through the process of raising financing for environmentally sustainable projects aligned with ESG principles, step by step.

Although public discussion around ESG has become less prominent in recent years, sustainability considerations remain an important component of strategy and long-term growth for many companies and investors. This is particularly true for entities undertaking investments related to the energy transition, energy efficiency and modern infrastructure. With these market participants in mind, the WSE has prepared the Green Bond Handbook, which systematises knowledge on green bond issuance and the functioning of this market segment on Catalyst.

“Green bonds are becoming an increasingly important instrument supporting both business growth and the transition towards a more sustainable economy. They demonstrate that effective financing and responsible development do not have to be mutually exclusive. Green bonds enable companies to raise capital for strategic investments while at the same time strengthening their credibility and demonstrating their commitment to environmental objectives,” said Mikołajczyk, Director of the Primary Market Department at the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

The Green Bond Handbook provides a practical overview of the entire green bond issuance process, from preparing the issuance framework and required documentation, through offering-related activities, to listing the instruments on the Catalyst market and fulfilling ongoing disclosure obligations. The publication also presents key ESG-related requirements and best practices in investor communications.

The new guide was prepared in cooperation with a broad group of bond market experts, including representatives of financial institutions and law firms active in the debt financing market. The publication was also developed with the involvement of WSE specialist teams responsible for the primary market, issuer relations, legal and compliance matters, as well as ESG-related issues.

“For many years, the Catalyst market has supported companies and local government entities in raising capital through bond issuances. As the sustainable finance segment continues to grow, there is an increasing need for a clear presentation of the rules and standards applicable to issuers choosing this form of financing,” noted Dariusz Mejszutowicz, Deputy Director of the Primary Market Department at the Warsaw Stock Exchange.

The Green Bond Handbook expands WSE’s library of practical publications, which also includes the IPO Handbook, the Catalyst Bond Handbook and the Catalyst Guide for Local Government Units. It also complements the educational activities conducted by the Exchange under the GPW IPO Academy programme, which aims to support issuers in making effective use of capital market opportunities.
